Ensure label claims with Maxx Performance microencapsulation
July 15, 2007

CHESTER, N.Y. – Dietary supplement manufacturers can ensure their products deliver nutrients in the amounts claimed on their labels by using Maxx Performance microencapsulation. Microencapsulation protects nutrients from degradation, so that the amount initially added to a product formula remains intact through processing to the end product. Overdosing with nutrients is no longer necessary to get the required amount in a product. “Some manufacturers put in as much as five times the necessary amount of a nutrient in order to get the amount they want in the product,” says Maxx Performance CEO, Winston Samuels. “Microencapsulation eliminates this hit or miss approach to nutrient delivery, and it can help to reduce costs.”

The recent ruling from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration establishing regulations to require current good manufacturing practices for dietary supplements makes it more important than ever to deliver precise amounts of nutrients in dietary supplements. The rule is meant to reassure consumers about the quality of dietary supplements, so that they can be confident that the products contain what is on the label. “The final rule will help ensure that dietary supplements are manufactured with controls that result in a consistent product with accurate labeling,” said Robert Brackett, Ph.D., director of FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, in an agency release.

The technology platform used by Maxx Performance is a robust one allowing for the delivery of a consistent product without over- or under-dosing with each and every delivery. Maxx Performance’s microencapsulation process not only gives dietary supplement makers the ability to deliver exact amounts of nutrients, but it also keeps nutrients—like arginine and carnitine that tend to absorb moisture—free-flowing. Microencapsulation also prevents the oxidation of vitamin C and masks the taste of potassium chloride, both of which are commonly used in the manufacture of dietary supplements.
